Object name basket
Object ID 1966.014
Description Square-bottom woven basket; top edge nearly round An Indian splint basket. Baskets like these were made by Indians who remained in the area after the Revolutionary War. They peddled them among the farmers sometime after 1800. The baskets were woven of splint made from strips of wood from ash trees, the strips having been soaked in water. The various designs stamped in different colors on the baskets were the identifying marks of the Indian families that made them.
