Description
|
White marble rococo-style plaque with round open center which frames a tinted tintype of a young woman; picture is held in place with a metal strap; two screws attach the plaque to a tombstone
The object was found after a storm beside a broken tombstone in Briggs Cemetery, Town of Ballston by the donor and his father, the late Kent C. Reynolds. The elder Reynolds identified the grave as that of Sarah Sherwood. The tintype from the broken tombstone is likely a picture of Sarah Sherwood, whose grave it marked. The Durkee cemetery records of the 1870s lists the following graves in Briggs Cemetery: Sarah, dau. of T. and C. Sherwood, d. July 18, 1856 ae. 21 years. Thomas Sherwood, d. September 6, 1856 ae. 56. In the words of the donor, "This Sarah, dau. of Thomas, fits the story that she was engaged to marry my great-uncle Alonzo B. COmstock. He was b. 1828, d. 1903, m. 1860 Mary Tibbetts (1834-1883). Sarah Sherwood, therefore, would have been about 3 years older than my grandmother, Nancy Helen Comstock (1838-1910), who married Abram Reynolds."
