HOME /   HOTEL  SCHOOL RESIDENCE  /  SANITARIUM  MUSEUM

In 1910, the building known as Brookside was leased by Dr. Howard A. Gibbs, who used the building as Brookside Sanitarium.  [A sanitarium is defined as an institution for the promotion of health.]  Dr. Gibbs provided medical treatments using the mineral springs.  With the opening of this sanitarium, the building was once again used by people coming to Ballston Spa looking for health-related cures.
(Recall!  When did Abby May come and why?)

Student Activity:  Look at the document in the supporting materials section below.  Use that information and the photographs to write a letter to Dr. Gibbs thanking him for his treatments and for the wonderful time you had staying at the Brookside Sanitarium.

The Brookside Sanitarium lasted for only two years.  In the years between 1912 (when the Sanitarium closed) and 1971(when the building became a museum), it was used as a private residence, a photography studio, an antique shop, and an apartment house.
