In 1865,when Henry Mann bought the former boy's
school, his family (wife, Matilda and five children, Henry Jr., James,
William, Edward and Ella) moved into the
building making it their residence or home.
By 1876, the family faced "money" problems and began taking in boarders. (Click here to see James' diary entry.) By 1888 the money and business problems had increased and Henry was forced to auction off his property. In 1889, the home was sold to William Waterbury, who had been married to Henry's daughter Ella (She died in 1888). Henry, Matilda, and son James continued to live in the home, and when Henry died in in 1892, Matilda and James began paying rent. (Click here for a rent receipt.) In 1892, James and Matilda were asked to leave the residence. (Click here to see Matilda's diary entry.) Both Matilda and James kept diaries describing their life at "Brookside." By the 1890s, the name "Brookside" first appears in the diaries and it is thought that the name was chosen by the Mann's while taking in boarders. (Click here to see James' diary entry.) In 1895, the residence was leased to George Cunningham and his mother, Eliza. They ran Brookside as a boarding house and advertised it in a brochure, "The Brookside: A Summer Home" in 1897 as a modernized building because it had indoor plumbing and electricity. In 1907, the Waterbury's mortgage was foreclosed and the residence was sold in 1908. By1910, the building was no longer a residence. ![]() From
