The current use of the building is as the
home of the Saratoga County Historical Society, also known as Brookside
Museum. Because of an interest in local history, the Ballston Spa Area Historical Society was formed in 1962. (See Minutes for November10,1962.) This society held its meetings in the Saratoga County Clerk's Office on West High Street. By 1968, it looked like the county building would be demolished [to be torn down]. At the same time Brookside was in a state of disrepair due to neglect and an absentee landlord. [The owner, William Munsinger lived in Albany.] The society's need for a new location and Brookside's need for a "tender loving care" finally came together in 1971 when the society purchased the building for $13,500. (See Minutes for September 11, 1971.) Note: the Ballston Spa Area Historical Society changed its name in 1970 to the Saratoga County Historical Society [SCHS]. (See Minutes for February19, 1970.) As soon as the building was purchased by the SCHS, plans were made for restoration and preservation of the building as part of the historical heritage of the community. (See Restoration Photos.) A wide range of improvements were made and in March 1974 the SCHS held its first meeting at Brookside. (See Minutes for March 20, 1974.) Over the last 30 years, improvements on the building have continued and Brookside today is a vital historical and educational resource for the community and surrounding county.
