Brief History of Mineral Springs

*

The use of mineral waters to treat and cure ailments predate recorded  (written) history.
The Native Americans were believers in the miraculous healing powers of mineral waters.
The Iroquois believed the springs to be sacred.  They guarded the location of the springs to
keep them secret as long as possible.

What is mineral water?

All water contains certain salts.  To be considered mineral water, the water must contain a certain amount of dissolved minerals.  The amount of dissolved minerals is fifty grains per gallon.  The mineral water in the Ballston Spa area fits into that guideline.  The waters of the Ballston area contain the highest concentration of minerals because the water comes from the deepest wells.  (The deeper the well, the higher the concentration of minerals.)
The following minerals are found in area mineral water:
Sodium chloride (table salt) - most abundant
         Calcium bicarbonate
         Magnesium bicarbonate
         Sodium chloride
         Potassium chloride
         Iron carbonate
Carbon dioxide - helps minerals to dissolve and provides the carbonation in the water
         Barium
         Ammonium
         Bromine
         Silica
         Alumna
         other trace elements
