Iron Railing Spring, circa
1817

Ballston
Spa in 1817. This is a view of the original spring as seen
from Aldridge's Hotel. A tourist guide had this to say about
the first Ballston
Spring: |
|
"The Old Spring or Iron Railing Spring as it is frequently
called is located in the middle
of the street opposite Aldridge's. The hollow area in which
the spring is situated is enclosed
with a handsome iron railing. The bottom of the depression is
paved with stone and there
are steps leading down to the spring. The fountain is secured
by a metallic tube about
eighteen inches in diameter and the water gushes over the top of a
spout two feet high.
The overflow us directed away form the area in a horizontal pipe in
a regular stream.
The water is quite agreeable to the taste
and it produces an exhilarating effect upon
the spirits. It emits a slight smell, but not unpleasant and
is copiously impregnated with
a carbonic acid gas. The medicinal virtues of these waters
have attracted much attention
and Ballston Spa has become a place of fashionable resort in the
summer."
