Abigail May Journal - Transcription

Mr. Aldridge has lengthened his dining room near one third - with a new kitchen
at the end and over the whole, are nine new lodging rooms proper for gentlemen
only - they each will contain a window, bed, table, and chair - and open upon a
piazza similar to that in front of the house: these when completed will enable
Mr. Aldridge to entertain an hundred people - or rather he says so...

Conjectural Floor Plan of Aldridge's Hotel in 1800

This floor plan show the hotel, as it probably looked in 1800 when Abby May visited Ballstown Springs.  May noted in her journal (transcribed above) that the long wing to the rear, which contained bedrooms for guests on the second floor and a dining room ("long room") and kitchen on the first floor, had recently been added by the owner, Joshua B. Aldridge. These plans appeared in Field Horne's The First Respectable House  and were modified for the Historic Structure Report.
