RESEARCH: Information/ Rules and regulations for library use

Information

Rules and Regulations for the Library and Archives

The Saratoga County Historical Society maintains a research library for the benefit of the public. We promote the use of the resources and actively encourage the public to explore their past by exploring these items. However, since many of these items are rare, delicate and/or extremely valuable, we must ensure that they are in a safe environment in order to preserve them for future generations.

It is the responsibility of Brookside's staff to guard against the unlikely occurrences of the following: inappropriate handling of materials, desecration (ex: writing on historic materials or materials found in any holdings.), theft or violation of any rules of the library. Please respect our historic items.

The following procedures are designed to ensure that all patrons and visitors are able to use the library's resources and serviced effectively and to ensure an orderly and pleasant research environment. Adhering to these stipulations is required and appreciated.

the following rules apply:

Research materials can be accessed during regular museum hours or by appointment.

All individuals using the library must complete a Library Use Form.

All library and archival material must remain in the designated location within our facility.

Notes may be taken with a pencil, audio recorder or personal computer.

Pens, highlighters, etc. are strictly forbidden.

No marks may be made on materials, no notes written on top of materials, no sticky notes can be placed on materials, no tracing, and no books or other objects may be placed on materials.

Researchers must use particular care in handling all materials.  Many are old, valuable, and/or unique, and are easily damaged.  Turn pages slowly and carefully.  Please report any, mutilations, missing files, or mis-filings.

Researchers must maintain manuscript and archival materials and files in the order in which they are received and not attempt to re-arrange files.  Advise staff of any materials you believe to be out of order but, please, do not change the order.
