Freehold Presbyterian
Church in Charlton, in the midst of burning.
Fire is always a
disturbing event, and older buildings, particularly wood ones and those
undergoing renovation/restoration, are particularly susceptible. The
members of the Freehold Presbyterian Church learned this lesson in 1970 when
their 1852-1853 church caught fire during a $50,000 renovation/restoration
project. The fire started in the tower, which was being reinforced, and
then traveled to the steeple and roof. The sanctuary suffered smoke and
water damage during containment. Fortunately, the building was not
destroyed and continues to exist today.
The Freehold Presbyterian
Church was founded in January 1786 by approximately twenty members of the Old Tennant
Church of Freehold New Jersey. Charlton itself was founded primarily by
Scotch/Irish families of western Monmouth County, New Jersey, hence the New
Jersey connection.
