Toboggan slide at Glen
Mitchell, Saratoga County. Captioned by Wooley "Looking Down the
Slide from the Top."
Despite
the difficulties of winter and the amount of preparation it required, the people
of Saratoga County still found ways to enjoy the cold and snow. Winter was a
very social season, and winter sports clubs combined recreation, winter, and
society. Winter
sports clubs were formed in Ballston Spa and Saratoga Springs to help organize
outdoor activities. Many outdoor sports popular today were also enjoyed in the
late 1800s and early 1900s. Skiing, ice-skating, and sledding were popular, but
the favorite outdoor sport in Saratoga was tobogganing.
Brookside Museum
cares for toboggans in our permanent collection, and some recreational artifacts
can be seen in person at Winter
in Saratoga, a temporary exhibit opening February 1, 2003.
