Colored view of the Old
Iron Spring, looking northwest. The Old Iron Spring was drilled by the
village in 1874, only 50 feet from the original Iron Railing Spring that was
discovered in 1771 and failed in 1835. The Iron Railing Spring was located
"in the middle of the street opposite Aldridge's [now Brookside
Museum]. The hollow area in which the spring is situated is enclosed with
a handsome iron railing. The bottom of the depression is paved with stone
and there are steps leading down to the spring." The water has a
strong iron taste and still runs today. The medicinal qualities of this
spring have been debated for over 200 years, but some residents still swear by
the water and can be seen filling numerous gallon jugs! The pavilion was
used as a concession stand for many years, and today is used by the Lions Club
as a concession stand for village-wide events.
