KEEPING
WARM |
|
|
If
you were to walk into a home of the late 1800s in the midst of
winter, you could expect to find it very cold. Without insulation
and storm windows, the cold blustery air of winter seeped into
houses leaving them bitterly cold. Few homes at this time had
central heating systems. Fireplaces and “parlor stoves” were
primary sources of heat.
During the winter
months, people tended to use only the rooms that had a fireplace or
parlor stove.
To
help fight off the cold, people dressed in heavy layers of clothing
and had an abundance of blankets and quilts readily available. |
