GETTING AROUND

To travel at the end of the nineteenth century in Saratoga County, one walked, rode a horse-drawn carriage, or rode a trolley. During the winter months, snow and ice, complicated travel. When traveling on foot, snowshoes were used to walk through snow-covered areas without falling into deep snow. Those fortunate enough to own a horse for transportation simply switched out their carriages for sleighs which were able to glide over snow and ice.

Trolleys were key transportation vehicles for the people of Saratoga County because the Schenectady County Railroad ran to Schenectady and Albany where many worked.

Though many trolleys were fixed with snowplows, service was often interrupted during major storms.
