Winter
in Saratoga
"Winter
in Saratoga" traces how the people of Saratoga County dealt with winter in
the days before central heat and huge state snow plows were common. The
exhibit will be open during regular museum hours through the end of 2003.
One hundred years ago winter
required far more preparation than it does today. People often spent months
stocking up on food, gathering wood for fuel, making or mending winter clothing,
and preparing the house for harsh winds and snow. Keeping warm and getting
around were more difficult at the turn of the 20th century than they
are today. Yet it is clear that the people of Saratoga
County enjoyed winter despite its difficulties. Though sledding and sleighing
were popular outdoor activities, tobogganing was the local favorite.
Brookside’s collection of
documents, photos, and objects reveals the realities of winter in Saratoga
County. The topics of our exhibit range from winter blizzards to parlor stoves
to sleigh ride parties. We hope that when you visit Brookside in 2003 you will
come away with a greater appreciation for how the people of Saratoga County
lived through winter a hundred years ago.
